It’s no secret that I love music. I’ve had more than a couple posts here concerning music, but for awhile, I stopped listening to music. I have talk radio to blame for that. I listened to Frosty, Heidi and Frank for about 3 years to pass the time at work. Once they got laid off, I turned to their podcasts and eventually discovered KNX News Radio and 710 ESPN. But now that the NBA season is over, I’ve returned to listening to music. Like, really listen to it, the way that I used to. Back in the day, I used to go to live shows, I’d actually buy CDs and music would always be playing in Winamp (!) and then iTunes.
One of my best friends recently recovered his crashed hard drive from college and we spent an afternoon going through all his mp3s. It was the equivalent of going through someone’s vinyl collection and throwing something on a turntable, but instead it consisted of scrolling and double clicking. I love how certain songs bring you back to a period in your life. Every song we clicked on we could accurately state when the song came out and even associated some songs to a specific house party we went to. I missed being able to do that so I’ve made the conscious effort to listen to music again. To rediscover old albums I used to play on a loop and discover new bands. And of course, with the passing of Michael Jackson, I played tribute to his memory by playing his hits during my commutes.
So with that, I’d like to mention two artists that I’ve been into lately. The latest albums by Anberlin and Silversun Pickups are two great albums that you can listen the whole way through. You can thank KROQ for introducing me to Anberlin and eventually playing out both Anberlin’s and the Pickups’ first singles off their current albums. Be sure to check out my AIM and Google chat status to find out what I’m listening to live (I love iChat).
